"She [Winocour] didn’t want me to do any research. She was like, 'Everything you need to know is in the script. We’re not doing a historical re-creation. We’re making a love story. We’re talking about sex, and we’re talking about love and how you turn from object to being the master of the man who is totally dominating you.'"

In Paris in the winter of 1885, Professor Charcot is studying a mysterious disease, hysteria, at the Pitié Salpêtrière. Nineteen year old Augustine becomes his favorite guinea pig, the star of his demonstrations of hypnosis. From a subject of study, she gradually became an object of desire.

AUGUSTINE, is a film for which Soko says she needed to lose some weight for the nude scenes. Directed by Alice Winocour, AUGUSTINE is set in the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris in 1885. It explores the mutual fascination that develops between Doctor Charcot (Vincent Lindon) and his patient. Soko plays Augustine, a young housemaid who is showing all the symptoms of 'hysteria'. Both the film and Soko's performance in it have received rave reviews after its initial showing at Cannes.

Jean-Martin Charcot Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), the subject of this film, created neurology as a firm discipline. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis was not only described but was named by him, and he was a major contributor to the knowledge of poliomyelitis and other neuropathies. He also wrote on hysteria, expanded the use of hypnotism and was involved early on in the conflict over animal experimentation.

Chiara Mastroianni (daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve) plays the wife of Charcot. The film was produced by Isabelle Madelaine and Emilie Tisné. It was filmed in Ille de France

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER had this to say about Soko's performance in Augustine:

"Soko...compellingly underplays an individual awkwardly caught between girlhood and womanhood by her physical traumas. She certainly confirms the promise that saw her nominated as 'Best Female Hope' at the 2006 Césars (for Xavier Giannoli's In the Beginning), holding her own against the avuncular, ever-observant slyness of the vastly more experienced Lindon, himself a four-time César nominee."

AUGUSTINE has been released on DVD and BluRay in the US (French with English subtitles). It can be ordered from Amazon. The film can be streamed on Netflix.

Two short films by director Alice Winocour, Magic Paris (2007), and Kitchen (2005), are included on the Blu-Ray and DVD of Winocour's first feature AUGUSTINE. Both the DVD and Blu-Ray are available on Amazon. The DVD available from Netflix does not have the short films included. Winocour is pictured (below right) during an interview by NOW Magazine, in which she said: "The topic of the film [Augustine] is really the way men look at women, in the beginning as a guinea pig, and then as an object of desire."
